Wood Privacy Fence Through Mature Trees, Virginia Beach

This one was a little different. A 6-foot treated dogear privacy fence through a yard with mature trees — navigating between the root systems and getting posts in solid ground without damaging the trees. Tight work, but we got it done.

The Challenge of Fencing Around Trees

Established trees and fence installation don’t always play nicely together. Root systems spread far wider than most homeowners expect — sometimes 2-3x the drip line of the canopy. Digging post holes through surface roots can damage the tree, and roots that grow under concrete footings can crack them over time.

There are a few ways to handle it:

Work between the roots. Where possible, we locate post positions to avoid major root masses. Sometimes this means adjusting panel lengths slightly — not every span has to be identical.

Shallower footings with wider base. In root-heavy areas, a wider concrete base at shallower depth often holds better than a deep narrow column that fights through root masses.

Accept some fence-tree contact. Trees grow. A fence that’s a foot away from a tree today may be in contact with it in five years. We position posts accordingly and advise homeowners on what to expect.

The Result

Despite the tight conditions, this fence came in solid — full 6-foot height, properly set posts, and a clean line through a challenging yard. Treated lumber handles the extra moisture that comes with being near tree root systems without rotting out the way untreated wood would.
