This is one of our favorite project types — a cedar capped top privacy fence anchored with custom brick columns. The brick columns are the kind of detail that makes a fence look like part of the house rather than an afterthought.
Why Brick Columns Change the Whole Look
A standard privacy fence uses wood posts. Functional, but not memorable. Brick columns at the corners and gate openings do something different — they create a sense of permanence. The brick reads as structural, as architectural, as part of the property. The cedar fence panels between them become the fill, and the columns become the statement.
It’s a significant upgrade — but it’s the difference between a fence that looks installed and one that looks designed.
How the Construction Works
The brick columns go in first on concrete footings. We size them for the application — typically 12”x12” for a 6-foot privacy fence. Once the columns are cured, the cedar rails and boards go in between them, with hardware anchored directly into the brick. The cap rail ties the whole run together horizontally.
End result: a fence that will outlast the cedar panels. When the wood eventually needs replacing (15–25 years), the brick columns stay.
Cedar in Chesapeake’s Climate
Cedar handles Hampton Roads humidity well — better than treated pine in many respects because it resists moisture and insects without chemical treatment. The capped top protects the end grain, further extending the life of each board.
